The beautiful city castle on Donkerstraat was built in 1467 on behalf of Evert Zoudenbalch. Afterwards it had various purposes, as a chaplain’s building and secretariat of the Catholic church, a vocational school and a warehouse with showrooms for tradespeople, with the last resident, until 2008, being the Nature and Environment Foundation. In 1903 the building was destroyed by fire. The characteristic neo-Gothic facade of Namur stone, battlements, cross frames, stained glass windows with red shutters, everything has been restored to the original style during the renovation. In 2011, Huis Zoudenbalch was completely renovated and converted into a complex with 24 unique apartments. The apartments are all different and fully insulated. There is a communal courtyard and a central bicycle shed.
